“Independence has its value. Yet in our ‘secular hymn’ we wanted to celebrate the virtues of independence and mutuality. Where would we be without our families? Or friends? Our musical comrades? Our God or Gods, or lack thereof, whatever we might conceive him, her, it or them to be? If you lead I will follow”

The wheels are rolling in the ruts of the wheels
That have rolled down this trail before
The tumbleweeds dreaming, the cactuses seem to be
Pointing toward some distant door
Where’s the stewardess on this wagon train
Need something to cut the fog in my brain
When I just can’t take it anymore

If you lead I will follow
You give me comfort from the world
When my heart is feeling hollow
You fill it up with your diamonds and pearls

On the shores of Independence Rock we roll and laugh and dance and talk
And shake off the dust of the day
I stand on the granite just like I planned it
And I’m wondering if I could stay
But the sun is sinking in the west
This whole long trip’s just one big test
And damned if I’m gonna fail

If you lead I will follow
You give me comfort from the world
When my heart is feeling hollow
You fill it up with your diamonds and pearls

The angels are singing and I’m still clinging
To a crag at the end of the ledge
You’re calling to me, denying gravity
I close my eyes and step over the edge

If you lead I will follow
You give me comfort from the world
When my heart is feeling hollow
You fill it up with your diamonds and pearls
