“When Peter first mentioned this album to me, I immediately knew I wanted to write something against the grain. I also wanted to use blues as the basic musical structure and a jug band kind of feel. As I was thinking about the idea of home and the places we call home, that ole devil crept into my thoughts. The song came together pretty quickly after that.”

When the sun goes down, just before the break of day
He’ll be coming ‘round, looking for a place to stay
In the monochrome, the places the devil calls home
In the race for fame
Or to win the game
The seducer’s wiles
The politician’s smiles
Closer to the bone
The places the devil calls home

At the crossroads sign, he’ll be looking for to make a deal
On the dotted line, sign away, you’re soul he’ll steal
Anywhere you roam, the places the devil calls home
Where the heart turns cold
In the grab for gold
Where the weak are strong
Where the right are wrong
In the catacombs, the places the devil calls home

So when you’re down and out, hoping for the promised land
And you see his smile, and the offer of a helping hand
Hear the undertone, the places the devil calls home
In the race for fame
Or to win the game
The seducer’s wiles
The politician’s smiles
Closer to the bone
The places the devil calls home
