“I grew up with my mother, her sister and sister's daughter, and my grandmother and grandfather in a huge house my grandfather built around 1909 in Memphis. So many wonderful memories live in the walls of that house from my childhood. After my grandmother, grandfather and mother died, I continued to visit my aunt who lived there. Going back home to that house has always been wonderful, and it is my aunt's
arms outstreched that are mentioned in the song.”

THERE'S AN OLD HOUSE IN MY HOMETOWN IN A RUNDOWN NEIGHBORHOOD
THE PAINT PEELS OFF THE FRONT PORCH
THAT OLD HOUSE AT FIRST GLANCE IT AIN'T LOOKING SO GOOD
THEN A SMILING FACE APPEARS AT THE FRONT DOOR
AND TWO OLD ARMS REACH OUT TO ME
AND I GET THIS FEELING DEEP IN MY HEART
ONLY COMING HOME CAN BRING

IF THIS OLD HOUSE COULD TALK
WE WOULD HEAR A LOT OF STORIES
IF THIS OLD HOUSE COULD TALK
WE COULD WALK BACK THRU THE YEARS
THERE ARE SECRETS IN THESE WALLS
AND THEY HOLD A LOT OF MEMORIES
AND I KNOW WE'D HEAR THEM ALL
IF THIS OLD HOUSE COULD TALK

THERE'S A PHOTOGRAPH OF A FAMILY IN THE FIFTIES
ALL THOSE OLD FAMILIAR FACES
AND AS WE GATHER 'ROUND FOR DINNER AT THE TABLE
THERE'S A FEW MORE EMPTY PLACES
BUT AFTER FIVE GENERATIONS
THIS OLD HOUSE IS STILL STANDING ON ITS PLOT OF GROUND
AND I GET THE SAME OLD RECEPTION EACH TIME I COME BACK
TO MY HOME TOWN

IF THIS OLD HOUSE COULD TALK
WE WOULD HEAR A LOT OF STORIES
IF THIS OLD HOUSE COULD TALK
WE COULD WALK BACK THRU THE YEARS
THERE ARE SECRETS IN THESE WALLS
AND THEY HOLD A LOT OF MEMORIES
AND I KNOW WE'D HEAR THEM ALL
IF THIS OLD HOUSE COULD TALK
