“This song started one day when I was feeling disconnected from my voice and music. The song evolved into a reflection on how much comfort singing has brought me throughout my life – it has always been the touchstone that returns me to my heart – my home base. The last verse was inspired by the work I do with Swan Songs, a nonprofit organization I co-founded that fulfills musical last wishes by bringing their favorite music to the bedside of terminally ill patients.”
There was a girl a long time ago,
who sang like a whippoorwill
I never saw her but I could hear
her voice coming over the hill
When I was down in the valley,
weary and alone
The sound of her singing, was a bell ringing
Calling me home
There was a time not long ago,
when sadness rained down on me
A man came along with the sweetest of songs,
sent all the rain to the sea
When I was down in the valley,
weary and alone
The sound of his singing, was a bell ringing
Calling me home
I longed to wander early on,
far, far away from home
After all the miles, all the trials,
I’m right back where I started from
There’ll come a time, I don’t know when,
my light will start to fade
I hope that a choir of earthly angels,
sings me one last serenade
When I am down in the valley
weary and alone
The sound of their singing, will be a bell ringing
Calling me home
The sound of their singing, will be a bell ringing
Calling me home
