“I've always felt at home in nature, which I suppose is why this song is populated by flora, fauna, and even weather systems! I'm fascinated by the idea that birds, fish and humans all have fundamental places that they instinctively return to as theirs. Pairs of creatures ‘wander through the world/just following each other's tracks’, and take comfort in each other - Even when their home is nothing more than a hole in a rock. In a riff on Plato's ‘Allegory Of The Cave’, the two ‘loves’ are finally stripped even of physical fire, humbling them to the realization that the love that binds them together is not merely romantic; it is elemental and inevitable. It is home”
If I were a hunter and you were covered in fur
Do you think I’d recognize you in the woods?
And if you were a fish, tell me, where would we live?
‘cause darling, you know I’m a bird
Everyone needs a nest to cling to
Everyone needs a love
Everyone needs a breast to lean on
Everyone needs a home
If I were a fire-breathing dragon and you, a damsel in distress
I would lift you high upon my scaly back
And fly you up to safety, to interview the shapes of clouds
‘Til you could feel their tears and hear their stomachs growl
Everyone needs a nest to cling to
Everyone needs a love
Everyone needs a breast to lean on
Everyone needs a home
Maybe I’ll carry our house upon my back and you will feed me nectar when I tire
We’ll travel through the world just following each other’s tracks
You’ll be my fire
Be my fire
When the cave goes dark
Be my fire
When the cave goes dark
